Why do dogs sniff before peeing?
Dogs sniff before urinating for similar reasons to why they sniff before eating: to gather information. Sniffing allows them to sense what other animals have been in the area and to communicate through scent marking. By sniffing, they can also gauge the "social network" of dogs or other animals that have been there before them. After sniffing, they may urinate in a spot to mark their territory or leave a "message" for other dogs. The behavior is deeply rooted in canine instinct and social structure.
